So, you’ve heard about this popular south-facing viewpoint, overlooking multiple lakes, mountains, and two cities. Sounds like a dream right? Well, look no further than here to learn how to access one of the Okanagan’s most desired viewpoints – Spion Kop Hiking Trails.
Located in beautiful Lake Country, Spion Kop is made up of a network of trails that vary in difficulty. Winding through the tall ponderosa pines, and amongst the sparse bunch grass, you’ll be greeted with panoramic views of the Central Okanagan. There’s a good chance that if you’ve driven through Lake Country, you’ve passed right by the Spion Kop trails without realizing it.
Trails
What many people love about Spion Kop is the wide variety of trails that all vary in difficulty. Although they lead in different directions, most of the trails end up at the summit. Depending on your fitness level, how you’re feeling that day, and the crew you’re with, you can choose how challenging you want your hike to be.
With 8 main trails to choose from, it can be a tad overwhelming to pick the right one. Lucky for you, we’ve broken each one down to ensure you’ll have the best experience possible.
Paint Brush Trail
2km: Moderate
This trail has 130m of elevation and weaves through shaded areas, giving you views of Okanagan Lake along the way. There are no significant steep parts, and the trail itself lacks expansive views compared to other trails. You’ll only find yourself on this trail if you start from the Ravens Ridge Trailhead. You likely will have the trail to yourself until you intersect other trails at the Grand Overlook.
Ridgeline Trial
1.4km: Moderate
Is the perfect way to avoid the non-scenic parts of the Paint Brush Trail. Make your way up an old glacier ridge to reach incredible views of Okanagan Lake and Finrty Landing.
Summit Trail
4.4km: Difficult
Is the longest and most difficult hike in this area. Starting from Wood Lake, enjoy the steep and long ascent to the summit of Spion Kop. It’s rare for people to complete the entire trail on a casual day, but if you’re looking for a long burn, this is for you!
Arrowleaf Trail
2.2km: Moderate
This is the most popular trail in the network. Weaving gradually up the mountainside and crossing old logging roads, you’ll eventually reach the intersection of the Upper Lakes Trailhead and the Grand Overlook. Moderate difficulty and beautiful views of the eastern side of Lake Country make this a well traveled route.
Tower Trail
0.9km: Difficult
Is a short, punchy route that should be saved for experienced hikers. Merging with the Summit across some rocky steps, you’ll enjoy beautiful views as a result of your hard work.
Raptor Loop
3km: Easy
This is a perfect loop to take the whole family on, thanks to its easy grade and gorgeous views of Wood Lake and Oyama. This trail got its name from the raptors that reside along the trail, if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see their nests.
Lupine Trail
1.3km: Moderate
This trail connects Arrowleaf with the Summit. Notice the change in vegetation – more moss and fir trees that make you feel like you’re in a totally different area. Leading to the North Overlook, you’ll be treated with a different set of views than the Summit and Grand Overlook.
Grand Overlook
If you’re feeling tired from the climb, take a rest here on the bench that marks the intersection of the Tower, Arrowleaf, and Paint Brush Trails. Take in the gorgeous views of Lake Country, catch your breath, and continue up to the Summit!
Spion Kop Summit
Finally, you’ve made it! Scramble over a short but easy section of rock to take in the expansive views you’ve been waiting for. There are two main viewpoints to enjoy – we’d recommend spending some time up here and bringing your favourite snack to reward yourself.
See if you can spot the 5 different lakes from the summit – where else can you see that many from one point of view?
Best Time to Go
You can hike Spion Kop year round, however during the winter months when snow is on the ground, the trails will become very slippery. We recommend bringing snow spikes to attach to your shoes or boots, and always carry the proper hiking gear.
Our favourite time to hike here is during a warm July morning where you can soak up the sunshine at the summit!
Dogs
Dogs are permitted in this network, but must be on a leash at all times.
