West Kelowna

Welcome to Westside

Situated on the west side of Okanagan Lake in the centre of the Okanagan Valley is West Kelowna. Commonly known as “Westside” by the locals, the city is surrounded by beautiful rolling vineyards, well-maintained trails, and gorgeous views. Separated by the lake, West Kelowna is on the opposite side of Kelowna and is connected by the famous William R. Bennett Bridge.

With almost 40,000 people calling this place home, West Kelowna is another rapidly growing city in the region. The way of life around here attracts an active lifestyle spent exploring the outdoors. Getting here by vehicle, Westside is a 4-hour drive east of Vancouver and 7 hours west of Calgary. The Kelowna International Airport is 15 minutes away, making it an easy destination from anywhere.

West Kelowna features a variety of attractions that cater to all interests and ages. Beaches, wineries, rich history, and an abundance of outdoor play make West Kelowna a popular vacation city.

We’ve noticed that it is oftentimes difficult to tell online where various businesses, beaches, and attractions are located when looking between Kelowna and West Kelowna… Well, we don’t do that around here, we want it to be obvious for you, as the reader. The local knowledge we’ve outlined below are the best things to do, places to stay, and food/drink options specifically in West Kelowna, no need to guess!

Things to Do

There’s plenty to see and do in West Kelowna. From hiking the popular trail networks & biking along the pristine waterfront to wine tasting and fruit picking, your days will be filled with adventure. Enjoy the beautiful landscape, culture, and people that make up this central Okanagan city.

Mt. Boucherie Hiking - Things to do in the Okanagan

Outdoor Activities

No matter the time of year, the amount of outdoor activities in West Kelowna is seemingly endless. Hiking is popular among the locals and Mt. Boucherie is the go-to mountain, with others being Bear Creek Provincial Park and Glen Canyon Regional Park. When the snow falls, head to Telemark Nordic to enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through the magical forests.

Wine

With almost 20 wineries to visit, you have options. The wineries on the west side of the Bennet Bridge differ from Kelowna’s thanks to their distinct volcanic rock terrain and unique aspect to the sun during warmer months. You could spend days exploring and learning the cool history of each winery, and we recommend the Westside Wine Trail for the best experience.

Family Fun

There’s no shortage of kid-friendly fun here in West Kelowna. For some outside fun, head to one of the regional parks in the area for a picnic and a hike. During the cooler or rainy days, check out Just4Fun Playcenter or the Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Center to let the kiddos burn their energy.

Water Sports

Being on Okanagan Lake, you have a ton of options to get onto the water. Everything from kayaks and standup paddleboards to high-speed bow riders and wake surf boats are available for rent at a handful of places. If you haven’t explored Okanagan Lake by boat, we’d highly recommend it.

Golf

There are two golf courses in West Kelowna, each playing a part in one of Canada’s longest golfing seasons. Shannon Lake Golf Course is built amongst the towering pine trees and rolling hills, whereas Two Eagles features breathtaking views of the Okanagan Valley. Each course is distinctly unique and equally fun, so if you have the time, get a round in at both!

Arts & Culture

The rich history of West Kelowna stems from the Syilx People of the Okanagan. Visit the Sncewips Heritage Museum to learn about the Okanagan’s history from a Syilx perspective. The Westbank Museum is another special place to many, and there are numerous art galleries that feature the work of the incredible West Kelowna artists in all forms.

Shopping & Markets

The Westbank Farmers Market features a variety of produce, farm products, and homemade artisanal goods. For other shopping needs, visit the many shopping centers that have everything from local shops to big box stores, although we always recommend supporting local.

Health & Wellness

Although West Kelowna is known for its outdoor exploration, there is no shortage of wellness centers and spas to get you feeling right. Relax and rejuvenate at the many day spas scattered around the city or enjoy the many services offered at the natural wellness clinics. Whatever you choose, you deserve to pamper yourself while on vacation!

Events

With a variety of events held throughout the year, there’s always something to do in West Kelowna. During the winter, enjoy the West Kelowna LightUp to welcome the holiday season. Summertime means live music, with Music in the Park every Friday evening in July & August, as well as various concerts happening at the many wineries in the city throughout the year.

Winter Activities

Big White Ski Resort is the go-to mountain for many West Kelowna residents, however, Apex Mountain Resort and Silverstar Mountain Resort are also within a reasonable distance. Closer to the city, enjoy the well-groomed trails at Telemark Nordic Center on skis or snowshoes, or take a snowy walk up one of the popular hiking trails!

Entertainment

The Landmark Cinemas Xtreme West Kelowna Theatre is the go-to theatre on Westside. Within a 6-minute drive over the bridge and into Kelowna, you’ll have access to casinos, performing theatres, nightlife, and more. During the winter season, check out a Westside Warriors hockey game to see some young stars battle it out on the ice. In the summer,  you’ll be hard-pressed not to find a winery event happening nearby. Whatever day of the week or time of the year, you’ll always have something fun to do in West Kelowna.
