Located one hour south of the Kelowna International Airport and home to a regional airport, it is an easy city to get to. 5 hours east of Vancouver, and 8 hours west of Calgary by car, Penticton is a popular road trip destination. 

The hot, dry summers attract visitors to spend time by the lake, while the winter offers deep snow in the mountains for skiers and snowboarders. This four-season playground has no shortage of activities no matter what you’re into.

Outdoor Recreation

From biking to rock climbing to kayaking, Penticton is a mecca when it comes to outdoor adventure. In the spring and fall, the Skaha Bluffs attract passionate rock climbers from around the globe. When the snow falls, the masses migrate to the mountain, where downhill and Nordic skiing are popular activities at Apex Mountain Resort. During the summertime, people are hiking, biking, and enjoying various water sports.

Wine

Fun fact, there are 80 wineries within a 20-minute drive of Penticton. Amazing, right? These numbers speak for themselves – wine is perhaps the most popular reason to visit Penticton. Spend your day exploring the local, unique wineries on either a private or self-guided tour and learn the history of these world-renowned varieties. Welcome to wine country. 

Beaches

The options are seemingly endless when it comes to beaches in Penticton. On those frequent hot, sunny days in the summer, there’s no better place than the beach. Skaha Lake Park Beach and Okanagan Beach are the two classic hotspots. Whichever you choose, you’re going to enjoy basking in the hot sun and having a clean lake to cool off in!

There is no shortage of family-friendly activities in Penticton. Bring your raft and take a float down the Penticton Channel, let the kids blow off some energy at LocoLanding Adventure Park, or bring the family to Okanagan Beach for some fun on the Penticton Wibit! Water Sports

Two lakes within a 5-minute drive from downtown – Penticton is the epicentre of a water sports enthusiast’s dream. Boating, kayaking, SUPing, and swimming are just a few of the popular lake activities here. With an abundance of rental options at places like Penticton Boat Club & Rentals and Skaha Marina, there’s no shortage of picks to get you out on the water.

Golf

Being in the Okanagan, Penticton has one of the longest golfing seasons in Canada. From the incredible lake, mountain, and vineyard views to the perfectly manicured greens, there are plenty of high-quality courses that are sure to test your game. Let your creativity flow in the many workshops and exhibitions held at the Leir House Cultural Center. This historic building is the heart of arts & culture in Penticton, and for good reason. Shopping & Markets

The Penticton Farmers Market, home to 80 vendors weekly, is a widely recognized market. Head downtown on a Saturday morning between April and October to find incredible hand-made goods, fresh produce, and a variety of farm products for sale – you won’t be disappointed. Cherry Lane Shopping Center is the go-to place for all your shopping needs and will be sure to provide your retail therapy!

Relax and rejuvenate at one of the many spas in Penticton. Whether you’re looking for a full body massage, manicure & pedicure, a facial, or a new hairdo, there’s a place here to provide you with the pampering experience you deserve. 

Events

There are a number of annual events that Penticton is well-known for. In the summer, Peachfest is the main summer draw with live music, rides, and entertainment over the span of a few days. Ironman Canada comes to town in August, which the whole city rallies around, and the South Okanagan Events Center is constantly hosting various concerts that draw people from all over the province.

Winter Activities

Apex Mountain Resort is the go-to winter destination for locals and tourists alike in Penticton. Whether you’re a skier, snowboarder, skater, or snowshoer, Apex has something for you. In town, rent a fat bike and explore the Kettle Valley Railway, or take a snowy hike up Munson Mountain! Although it’s not beach weather, there’s still plenty to do in this winter wonderland.

South Beach Gardens Tent & RV Park is a family-friendly campground located steps from Skaha Lake. Close to the popular Skaha beaches and a variety of activities, South Beach is a great camping option in Penticton. 

XR Family Campground provides space for both tent and RV camping. Sitting amongst beautiful orchards, there are free campgrounds as unique as this. With monthly rates available here, you can’t go wrong at XR.

The Station Public House is another local favourite that focuses on pairing fresh and locally sourced ingredients with local wine and beer. Enjoy a cozy meal by the fireplace in the winter, or cool off on the shaded patio in the summer. 

The Bench Market is also famous for its hearty lunches. Whether you’re eating on their sunny patio, or grabbing something on the go, there is a wide variety of tasty lunch options that will satisfy your cravings.

Brodo features a wide variety of soups, sandwiches, and hearty sandwiches. Brodo’s menu changes with the seasons, allowing them to continually change and incorporate local ingredients in different ways. 

Dinner in Penticton

Salty’s Beach House is commonly known as Penticton’s favourite restaurant. Located on the southern shore of Okanagan Lake, Salty’s offers a variety of unique summer cocktails, tasty seafood, and modern spins on classic cuisine. 

Neighbourhood Restaurant, although most commonly known for their tasty beer, also offers delicious cuisine! The team of “Culinary Wizards” put emphasis on creating unique spins on traditional dishes. 

Elma is a Turkish-inspired restaurant that focuses on combining the flavors of the Okanagan with traditional Turkish dishes. Developed by the in-house culinary team, the menu is constantly changing, improving, and bringing customers back for more. 

Villa Rosa is home to OpenTable’s “100 best restaurants for outdoor dining list”. This, combined with their delicious authentic Italian food makes them the most popular Italian restaurant in the South Okanagan. With a deep-rooted history, this is a must-try when visiting Penticton.

Penticton is essentially built around the many rolling vineyards placed up and down the valley. The Naramata Bench is home to over an impressive 30 wineries that are waiting to be explored by you!

Four Shadows Vineyard & Winery is a family-first winery. What began as a winery that was created off inspiration from a family portrait, Four Shadows offers a variety of blends that each tell their own story. For the full experience, book into their on-site guest house!

Poplar Grove Winery has its roots running deep in this region. This winery is one of the original five wineries on the Naramata Bench! Poplar Grove is most commonly known for their Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and delicious Pinot Grigio. 

Three Sisters Winery focuses on ensuring everyone who visits feels welcome. All their wine is produced using sustainable methods and farm-owned fruit. Bring your own picnic and enjoy it on the Patio, paired with a delicious wine from their Sister Series. 

La Frenz Winery was voted the 2021 best small winery of the year. Taste their incredible wines while overlooking Okanagan Lake, and be sure to purchase some of their award-winning wines for the road!

Slackwater Brewing features a double-floor, open-spaced patio for everyone (above 19) to enjoy. Known for “enjoying many libations in the spirit of companionship”, Slackwater is an incredible brewery with a large variety of unique beers to choose from.

Cannery Brewing serves beer of unmistakable complexity and balance, which is why they’ve created such a strong name for themselves. Come enjoy live music every Sunday while sipping on some tasty local brews!
